Work Zone Traffic Safety is Improved With Form Fitted Covers Manufactured by
TSSCC
|
|
|
Uncovered "out-of-service" traffic signs, signals
and pedestrian crossing heads cause serious work zone accidents. Until
now, there were no easy
solutions: inferior makeshift covers made out of trash bags, cardboard, plywood or
rags; inconvenience for workers to cover signs and signals in a timely
manner; unused signs and signals left exposed or sloppy application of
"covers." Conventional coverings are further disintegrated or are
partially or entirely blown away by weather conditions.
These situations confuse motorists, which can contribute to accidents.
Here are just a few stories told to us:

|
High Risk Cover
|
-
In California: A woman driving with her daughter entered
a ramp with an entrance sign that should have been covered. The
cover had blown away. The road was under construction and the car
rolled over at the end of the ramp. The daughter lost the use of an
arm. They sued D.O.T. and the contractor and received a high dollar
award for the injury.

High Risk Cover
|
-
In Maryland: The wind blew away the baggy on one of the
signal heads. It landed on an oncoming vehicle's front windshield causing
the driver to have a serious accident. The driver and his attorney
have filed a large claim
against both the city and the contractor.

-
In New Jersey: "One of my crew workers was
trying to cover a highway sign. Attempting to fasten the bungee cord, it snapped off and the hook hit him, damaging his eye and
cutting his face open . . . "
And the list goes on.

Convenient Covers by TSSCC

-
Now . . . current studies by the FHWA concerning highway
and road construction safety issues states: "To be effective,
devices used for construction zone traffic must: compel attention,
convey a clear and simple meaning, and permit adequate time for driver
response . . ."
